Occult Scholar Mitch Horowitz Explores Magick in History and Practice for the Hands-On Seeker

”Simplicity," wrote legendary occultist Jack Parsons “has been the key to victory in all idea wars and, at present, magick does not have it.” Practical Magick, acclaimed historian and esotericist Mitch Horowitz responds to this call, distilling magick to its core essentials.

Drawing upon ancient, Hermetic, Renaissance-era, and modern sources, Mitch dissects the building blocks of magick and provides formulas of immediacy, simplicity, and potency. He also surveys the history of magick, from deepest antiquity through the work of modernist intellects ranging from Newton and Schopenhauer to Crowley and Spare, finding connections to current studies in psychical research, quantum theory, and perceptual-based reality.

Readers receive to-the-point instruction in sex transmutation, sigil work, Tarot, backwards causation, the power of silence, tilting the scales of luck, magickal environments, and “spontaneous deity petition.” Mitch shows how to maximize your practice—and not overlook results when they arrive (a common malady).

Also considered are delicate topics such as the lefthand path, curses, modern novelties in magick and Hermeticism, the ethics of magick, and the bulletproof veracity of ESP research. Mitch asks, finally, whether magick can be practiced without rite or ritual, delivering the individual to his or her fullest gait.

Here is an unprecedented journey from a “believing historian” who undoes historical knots and explores magick in its richest and most practical dimensions.

“I love Mitch Horowitz”Dan Aykroyd

"An amazing author”Duncan Trussell

“The thinking-man’s mage”Douglas Rushkoff

“Mitch is solid gold”David Lynch

“Horowitz’s reflections are grounded in his history and a life of personal experimentation. He is not proposing yet another ‘system,’ nor asking the reader to believe or agree with him; instead, his invitation is to follow him to the fringes of reason and try things out for oneself.”Ferdinando Buscema, Boing Boing

Practical Magick Reviews

““Practical Magic” by Mitch Horowitz is a deep dive into the philosophical, historical, and psychological underpinnings of modern metaphysical thought. Drawing from theosophy, occult history, and academic studies on topics like ESP and consciousness, Horowitz presents his take on these topics through personal reflection and study comparison. While the book does contain some practical ideas—such as William Burroughs’ cut-up method, techniques for basic sigil work, etc. —I found it to largely lean towards intellectual analysis rather than actionable instruction (the latter being what I was expecting, per the “practical” in the title). The authors tone throughout the book is often dense and scholarly, occasionally veering into territory that feels more suited to impressing academia than to guiding practicing occultists. That being said, this book does contain many meaningful insights. One highlight for me was the chapter on persona cultivation, which explores how adopting a strong mental image of the self generates real-world magnetism. The following quote was a favorite of mine from this chapter, and is an excellent example of this: “Here’s a rare truth: People approach you for what they do not have. We look to others for what we need, for what we consider missing or under expressed in our lives. The definition of “cool” is not needing something from another. You do yourself no favors by seeking to over accommodate other people, because they are not coming to you for what they already possess. When simply presenting yourself as an iconic or self directed person, you not only become more appealing, but your self crafted image as you hone it, eventually reflects who you really are. It is not a mask, it is the shedding of a mask” Reflections like this are sprinkled throughout the book and I believe they offer genuine value and moments of contemplation. However, readers expecting a hands-on manual of magical techniques may find this book’s title misleading. Overall I enjoyed this book, even though it was not exactly what I was expecting, or looking for.”
