“Postcards From a Lake Monster is a whimsically cute and informative story about a young autistic lake monster, trying to navigate his life and learn more about what makes him unique at the behest of his caring mother and child psychologist Dr. Lena Spyros. As someone who does not have autism, I will admit that it can be easy to overlook differences, like autism, out of a lack of resources and lack of discussion surrounding the topic. I think that this book does a beautiful job of explaining what some of the symptoms of autism are, how they affect individuals, how each individual is different, and why it's important to understand those who may be different than us. I think what makes this book so special is that it feels genuine, and you can tell it was written by someone who understands the struggles of learning to work with your differences and more importantly, why they make you, you. This was such a beautiful way to approach the subject, and I suspect the more it's message is shared, the more children will be positively reassured of themselves, and will hopefully bring comfort to those seeking answers about autism and how their brain functions because of it. I'd like to finish by saying that I'm so glad to have read this book, I think we can all be better allies to those different than ourselves, just by exposing ourselves to their stories and understanding them in a more intimate way.”
