“Okay so like it’s not quite as bad as I initially thought but I’m still not a huge fan of this. William makes a point to say this isn’t a book about a proposition to fix poverty but because there is no ideology proposed and it’s mostly just rejections of other ideology’s mixed in with sardonic remarks about institutions, it’s hard to love this book. Once it became clear that William saying “you can’t call Rome evil just because they had slavery because they KNEW slavery was okay” was jokes and not an actual opinion it became much easier to stomach haha. This is my first Vollmann project so maybe it was a mistake since I’m not used to his style but there were quite a few sections of prose that were super engaging and wonderful observations, but in between the few very astute descriptions, and witty remarks, there’s a lot of repetition and mundanity which is not necessarily a knock on the content and the observed but more on the in between moments. Vollmann absolutely deserves to be praised for his courage and dedication to his journalism though, I just wasn’t very interested in his “conclusions” or his hypotheticals especially when it came to the very limited time allotted to policy.”
