“Alright, let’s keep it real… Perfect Is Boring is like sitting at brunch with your loud, confident auntie who loves to tell stories about “back in her day,” So when I picked up the book but tbh this book? Ehhh… it didn’t really give what it was supposed to give.
This book is like sitting in the beauty salon next to Tyra and her mama Carolyn while they talk loud enough for the whole shop to hear. It’s fun, it’s heartfelt, and sometimes it’s a little all over the place. But what shines is that mother-daughter bond. Carolyn? That woman is wise. She drops advice like, “Fix your crown and keep walking” and you believe her. Tyra, on the other hand, is being Tyra: dramatic, playful, extra but in that “I mean well” kinda way. ( you can hear it in the Audio book)
Now look, it ain’t a deep dive. Don’t expect scandal, secrets, or juicy behind-the-scenes Top Model drama. Tyra gives you glitter, not grit. The whole “perfect is boring” message? Dope. That’s a fact. But the delivery? Repetitive. This book talks a lot, but says just enough to keep you from closing it mid-way.
It’s nice . It’s positive. It’s not groundbreaking. But not everything has to be. This ain’t a bad book. But it ain’t a must-read either. It’s one of those “flip through on a Sunday, sip some tea, highlight a few pages, and keep it movin’” type reads.”
“I probably should have read the reviews before reading this book. I loved the thought behind the reason/need for the book but it was quite exhausting to listen to(audiobook). I think I would have enjoyed a book by Tyra’s mother instead of from both of them. I love the work Tyra has done and the girl empowerment initiatives but this book just did not do it for me.”
“This tries so hard to be down to earth and relatable but it just isn’t. It’s very surface level and shallow. I think Tyra’s heart was in the right place but it comes across self absorbed and superficial.”
