Publisher Description

Now an original Netflix film, directed by Rodrigo Prieto, cinematographer of Killers of the Flower Moon

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

"One of the best novels in Hispanic literature, and in literature as a whole.” —Jorge Luis Borges

The highly influential masterpiece of Latin American literature, now published in a new, authoritative translation, and featuring a foreword by Gabriel García Márquez

A masterpiece of the surreal that influenced a generation of writers in Latin America, Pedro Páramo is the otherworldly tale of one man’s quest for his lost father. That man swears to his dying mother that he will find the father he has never met—Pedro Páramo—but when he reaches the town of Comala, he finds it haunted by memories and hallucinations. There emerges the tragic tale of Páramo himself, and the town whose every corner holds the taint of his rotten soul. Although initially published to a quiet reception, Pedro Páramo was soon recognized as a major novel that has served as a touchstone text for writers including Mario Vargas Llosa and José Donoso. Now published in a new translation from the definitive Spanish edition by celebrated Rulfo scholar Douglas J. Weatherford, and featuring a foreword by Gabriel García Márquez, this new edition of the novel cements its place as one of the seminal literary texts of the twentieth century.

Pedro Páramo Reviews

3.5
“Completely lost me on what perspectives most passages are from and what time (past or present or what) it took place in at any given moment. Atmospheric, though, as if I was traveling through Comala, too. Creepy, too. Definitely need a reread.”
“Typically, I do enjoy fragmented, non-chronological stories and the dopamine kick you get by putting the puzzle pieces together. So I approached this book with an open mind, looking past the initial confusion and just trusting the process. I quite enjoyed the first half of the book, the narrative shifting between the past and the present, the blurred lines between the living and the dead. The prose was beautiful. Beautiful! I loved the animistic nature descriptions. Juan Rulfo creates an immersive, sensory world. However, the story got too confusing for me from a certain point. I couldn’t keep up with all the characters being introduced. (My tip to you: write down the characters as you read. I wish I would’ve done that.) Also some characters were disappearing all of a sudden and despite saying that I kept an open mind, one disappearance in particular did bother me and I got so entangled in that, that the book lost some of its charm for me. I appreciate the value and impact of this book as a forerunner of magical realism. It‘s not my favorite genre, but this might be my favorite magical realism book I have read so far. It definitely profits from a reread, as too many details and connections go unnoticed on a first read (or do as I did and watch the movie right after…or even before.)”
