Pearl City Reviews

4.0
“I’ve loved everything about the Phoenix Horde series since I picked up the very first book. From the start, it’s delivered that perfect blend of action, mythology, and attitude that reminds me of classic urban fantasy series like Kate Daniels and Jane Yellowrock and Pearl City is a worthy, exhilarating conclusion. This time, Emiko returns to her home turf in San Francisco only to find it under siege. The Dragons have come to reclaim their “pets,” but Emiko refuses to let her friends and family fall back under the yoke of these decidedly not benevolent masters. With few Jiaren allies left and limited control over her still-developing magic, Emiko has no choice but to improvise, fight smart, and lean into the prophecy that brands her as the Worldbreaker. She makes mistakes (sometimes costly ones) but her determination, grit, and heart make her journey all the more compelling. Watching her step fully into her power is nothing short of kick-ass and deeply satisfying. I’ll admit, I delayed starting this book because I didn’t want the series to end. The finale balances epic stakes with emotional payoffs, giving readers both closure and a sense of possibility beyond the final page. Bebelle and Vee have built a world that feels alive;gritty, magical, and full of complex relationships and I sincerely hope they’re not done with it yet. Maybe one day we’ll get a spinoff and see Freddy and Fiona take center stage; they've more than earned a story of their own. Until then, Pearl City stands as a powerful, heartfelt conclusion to a series that has easily become one of my modern urban fantasy favorites.”

Ken Bebelle

Ken Bebelle turned his childhood love for reading sci-fi and fantasy into a career in prosthetics. After twenty years he came back to books, writing about plucky underdogs and ancient magical artifacts with deadly secrets. He and his wife live in the Pacific Northwest and he still dreams of growing perfect tomatoes.
