Passing

By Nella Larsen
Passing by Nella Larsen digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Nella' Larsen (first called Nellie Walker) (1891- 1964) was a black American novelist of the Harlem Renaissance who wrote two novels, of which Passing is her best-known. Though her literary output was scant, what she wrote earned her recognition by her contemporaries and by present-day critics. Passing was first published in 1929 but has received renewed attention because of its close examination of racial & sexual ambiguities. It has achieved canonical status in many American universities.

“This was my second time reading this classic novel, and I enjoyed it and appreciated it even more than the first time. I found Irene to be very strange and overly suspicious in a way that I had not noticed in my initial reading. In my first reading, Clare was obviously the problem. In my second reading, I questioned if Irene was the problem because of her deeply suspicious perception of Clare from the very beginning of the text. I am glad that I read this book again after a few years because it made me think differently about the characters. I am not sure who to trust, and I think that was intentional.”
“This book deserves the status it has gained through the years. Larsen's ability to dive into race and identity, with a bit of womanhood on the side, is remarkable. Her words explores the complexity of such issues and of the people who deal with them. Moreover, her style is both straightforward and lyrical, in a mix that beautifully such complexities. The ambiguity of Irene's husband's relationship with Clare is just as clever as the ambiguity of the finale: perspectives are fundamental and, sometimes, it's almost impossible to arrive at a conclusive interpretation of what we see and perceive.”
