Papa's Mechanical Fish

By Candace Fleming & Boris Kulikov
Papa's Mechanical Fish by Candace Fleming & Boris Kulikov digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Candace Fleming and illustrator Boris Kulikov pair up to tell a fun story about a real submarine inventor in Papa's Mechanical Fish

Clink! Clankety-bang! Thump-whirr! That's the sound of Papa at work. Although he is an inventor, he has never made anything that works perfectly, and that's because he hasn't yet found a truly fantastic idea. But when he takes his family fishing on Lake Michigan, his daughter Virena asks, "Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a fish?"—and Papa is off to his workshop. With a lot of persistence and a little bit of help, Papa—who is based on the real-life inventor Lodner Phillips—creates a submarine that can take his family for a trip to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

“Cute little story! I always count children's books that I've had to read 3x or more. This one I'm using during my first 2 weeks of school for our intro to scientists or "problem solvers". Excited to use this book in my unit.”
“Found in L4L Volume 88.”
“This book is great to teach children not to give up. The main characters father has to try about 5 times to finally get his invention to work. Thus shows children that getting it wrong is just a stepping stone to getting it right! The book was written in a unique style. The pattern of dialog stayed the same while the words changed. The illustrations are vibrant and make the story feel more alive. This would be a perfect book for a classroom or home library for children in elementary school.”
