“I received this for review from NetGalley. I liked this book but did not love it. Peggy is an orphan being raised by her cousin's family. When she rejects a marriage proposal, her uncle kicks her out. Unsure of what to do, she turns to an old friend of her mother's who recruits her to be a spy in the court of King George.
The overall all premise of the story sounds promising but the execution did not work as well. I am willing to suspend believe in certain situations but I found it really hard to believe that Peggy would be able to go to court posing as a previous courtier and no one would notice. No matter how much she looked like the other girl I would still think her previous best friends and lover would notice.
The pacing of the story was also off. There would be interesting moments interspersed with long boring stretches. There are quite a few moments of introspection by Peggy as she tries to puzzle out her situation and as she figures out her feelings. I liked the way the book ended and I feel that the second book has potential to be quite a bit better. The setup for Peggy's place is made more plausible by the ending and I think it would be interesting to see future adventures from her.
Peggy herself was okay as a character. She was plucky and willing to do what it takes to survive but other than that she didn't have much depth to her.”
