Only a Lady Will Do
ByPublisher Description
Born into privilege and wealth, Julia Ballard joins the suffrage movement to gain the vote for women. Society is against the suffragettes, claiming the cause undermines social order and its proponents are most unladylike.
Julia rebuffs George Russell, a member of parliament, when he rescues her from an angry mob during a demonstration. She thinks him sorely mistaken (and terribly old-fashioned) if he believes she needs his help.
George, a widower with two small children, fancies himself a slayer of dragons. He sympathizes with the women's demands for voting rights, but disapproves of the suffragette's disruptive behavior and unruly methods.
Julia realizes her mistake and enlists George to bring a bill for women's suffrage before the Commons.
Meanwhile, George's mother, who lives with him and his children, meets the famous Egyptologist Sir Reginald Whitaker. After a whirlwind courtship, Sir Reginald asks Mrs. Russell to marry him and join him in Thebes.
She can't leave her son and grandchildren to fend for themselves. Mindful of George's political future, she introduces him to several promising candidates: Ladies who will be good hostesses and whose social position will help promote his career.
George fails to bring Julia's bill before the Commons, but he devises a scheme to grant her wish. Will she go along? Will she join him in slaying dragons?
