“Reid's heartwrenching tale asks if it’s possible to have multiple soul mates.” —Us Weekly
From the author of Maybe in Another Life—named a People Magazine pick—comes a breathtaking new love story about a woman unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiancé who has finally brought her back to life.
In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.
On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.
Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.
That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.
Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?
Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

“i feel at the peace with the ending (kinda), but also #justiceforjesse
actually, i don’t know how to feel, and i don’t think i will ever come to terms with my feelings. but, it was a great book from start to finish! i love taylor jenkins reid’s writing sooo much, and i never realized how many books of hers i have read and want to read.
ultimately, i would’ve been upset if she chose jesse and not sam too, so a win is a win? if i was emma i would’ve just killed myself, or maybe be a throuple idk
4.25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
““I think it’s a good sign, though, that I was crazy about you at 16 and I’m still crazy about you now”
The book shows how Emma and Jesse are drawn to each other at a young age by a shared desire to escape societal and parental expectations, finding freedom and understanding in one another. However, even before Jesse disappears, it becomes clear that they are no longer moving in the same direction: Emma gradually begins to seek stability, while Jesse remains committed to a restless, nomadic life. His decision to leave on their anniversary already reveals that emotional disconnect, which becomes even more evident when he returns and they find themselves mentally and emotionally far apart. In contrast, Sam represents a different kind of love, one that grows with time. His line “I loved you at 16, and I’m going to love you now” captures the evolution of Emma’s understanding of love and of herself. At sixteen, Emma wanted to escape and see the world, and she did so with someone who shared that dream. Only later did she realize that escape was not what she wanted forever. What she ultimately desired was stability, a home, and a family, things she found with Sam. Their love is not about shared adventures, but about shared values, growth, and choosing the same life, which makes their relationship feel so genuine and beautiful!”
“Interesting story, I enjoyed it mostly…
The story really highlighted how different versions of yourself can exist in different chapters of your life. I loved getting to know how Emma fell in love with both men. I was really drawn in when I felt as conflicted and unsure as she did, but once it became too obvious who she would choose the tension dropped and the ending felt overly drawn out and a little too Hallmarky.”
