One Good Earl Deserves a Lover

By Sarah MacLean
One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Lady Philippa Marbury is . . . odd

The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She's looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest—fourteen days to research the exciting parts of life. It's not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London's darker corners.

She needs . . . a Scoundrel

She needs Cross, the clever, controlled partner in London's most exclusive gaming hell, with a carefully crafted reputation for wickedness. But reputations often hide the darkest secrets, and when the unconventional Pippa boldly propositions him, seeking science without emotion, she threatens all he works to protect. He is tempted to give Pippa precisely what she wants . . . but the scoundrel is more than he seems, and it will take every ounce of his willpower to resist giving the lady more than she ever imagined.

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover Reviews

“This book would have been much better as a novella/short story. The unbelievable plot that it was, took forever to get past the hero's tortured past (silly in itself) and the heroine's constant reminders of her plain-looks, being bespectacled and scientific. I was sick to death of reading those descriptions, geesh. The fact that the heroine was so "smart" and disliked liars and dishonesty so much, I found it unbelievable that she would approach a scoundrel to partake in a marital experiment while she was engaged to be married to another. And for 200 pages that scoundrel hero tells her NO, not interested. Yet she doesn't give up. So silly.... And I have read other stories where the heroine asks a hero to teach her about love, etc like from her brothers BFF.... and the guy is scared or hesitant to get involved with his friends sister, yet romance occurs in those stories in little steps. This story? Nothing. No quick surprising kisses, no not-so-innocent touching, nothing. Until barely the end he just "couldn't take it anymore". And yet sends her away again. Even the ending was silly, the part at the church... Sigh....”
“Lady Pippa Marbury is on the cusp of marriage and is not happy about her lack of understanding of the mechanics of the marriage bed and all it entails. She’s scientifically minded and practical, so her logical solution is to approach a man with a scoundrel’s reputation to fill in the blanks. Cross is a part owner of a gambling hell and Pippa’s chosen research partner. Cross is intrigued by the unusual Pippa but has no intention of helping her - except, she’s not taking no for an answer. Pippa is something of an oddity amongst the women of the ton and has accepted that, but she can’t shake the feeling that she’s missing something that other women understand. I loved how Pippa’s mind worked and her sheer determination. Her development through the book was perfect - she doesn’t change who she is, but realises not everything is black and white and emotions can’t be neatly stored away. Cross is the tall, redheaded man I didn’t know I needed in my life. He was definitely something of an enigma and I was so curious about his past and why it had such an impact on how he now lived his life. He feels so unworthy of love and is just trying to atone for his past actions when Pippa sweeps into his life and upends everything. I adored how Cross appreciates Pippa for exactly who she was and how he just got her. The two of them were a gorgeous pairing and those steamy scenes! They were particularly excellent and I now have a thorough appreciation for The Chair Scene. The slow burn tension was paced perfectly, as was the development of their romance and the plot. I have been meaning to read this one for ages and I can definitely see why it’s such a popular book now! Cross and Pippa have delightful chemistry and there were times when I was holding back tears. There were also great side characters here, including the rest of the owners of the Angel - I’m thoroughly intrigued by Temple and Chase’s stories to come.”
