Ombria in Shadow
By Patricia A. McKillipPublisher Description
When Ombria’s prince, Royce Greve, breathes his last—in palace rooms high above the city—he leaves his young son and mistress at the mercy of his ancient and powerful great-aunt, Domina Pearl. Meanwhile, in a dreamlike underworld peopled by Ombria’s ghosts, a sorceress weaves her spells and brews her potions, never revealing her real face—or true heart. And somewhere in between, the struggle to rule the whole of Ombria—both its light and shadows—will rest in the hands of those whose fractured lives align like the lost pieces of a magical puzzle….

“I read this book for @sunbeamjess Moon book club pick and I absolutely adored it!
This book had absolutely everything in it that makes a perfect fantasy novel for my taste. The world was magical and interesting. The characters were colourful and alive. It was just so much fun to read! McKillip uses some really beautiful non-cliched descriptions throughout this novel, I was 17 pages into the book and literally said "What?!" out loud at the sheer beauty of the writing in this book and it carried on throughout the entire novel. Sometimes I find that the prose of some novels can start out really incredibly and get gradually lazier as the story continues, but that was not the case with this book.
The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is because although it was my ideal fantasy story, I don't think the book was totally perfect. Only small details though: the pacing sometimes felt a bit too fast. The novel could have been longer to avoid the feeling of rushing through it. Sometimes I did get a little lost as to what was going on/some things were a bit more unclear than others. There are some things I wish had been more thoroughly explained. But those things aside, I loved this book and would love to read more of McKillip's work in future!”
