Oedipus, King of Thebes Reviews

4.0
“I remember discussing Oedipus at school some 20+ years ago, though reading Sophocles’ play today, I wonder if we looked at his version of the story or another. At any rate, I was fascinated by the tragedy then and felt entirely enraptured again today. I always had a weakness for tragedies, and oh, the Greeks knew how to deliver, deliciously so. Like with Antigone, the wording feels fresh, like it could have been written recently. And yet there’s a power to it that brims with a certain something, a larger than life element, an unbridledness, that doesn’t seem to fit modern writings. Of course, I’m reading a translation, so any impressions of the text I have before me have to be seen through the lens of an interpretation that happened a few decades ago. Still, what a powerful, magnificent story, marvellously executed, and so very timeless.”
