“I love Anna Quindlen’s books and poignant writing. She draws me in to the emotions of her characters so well. This was her first novel and although it’s probably not as polished as some of her later books she developed the story and the characters very well and the story line is very believable and emotional. I could actually feel relief after John Scanlon died and I could feel the ability of the family to begin to enjoy each other. These types of family dynamics exist so often. It’s sad to think someone’s death can be a relief to those loved ones under their control. And the realization and acceptance of the family left behind that “he did the best he could do” is very very true and the first step towards allowing them to change their lives for the better.”
