Notwithstanding
ByPublisher Description
As the world around it marches forward, the bucolic English village of Notwithstanding remains unchanged. It is, as it always has been, a place of pubs and cricket pitches, where local eccentrics—a retired colonel who has eschewed clothes, a spiritualist living with the ghost of her husband, and a dog named Archibald Scott-Moncrieff—almost fit in. In this delightfully evocative collection of stories, in which a young couple falls in and out of love by letter alone, an eleven-year-old boy battles a monstrous fish, and a man of the cloth has a premonition of death, Louis de Bernières conjures up a rural idyll long since forgotten. Funny, bittersweet, and deeply felt, Notwithstanding is the bestselling author of Corelli’s Mandolin at his most enchanting.

“I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, especially knowing it was inspired by the author’s childhood in an English village. That personal connection made the setting and characters feel all the more vivid and heartfelt. Each story offered something unique, often blending warmth, humor, and a touch of eccentricity that made the village feel alive. I loved how the author brought such a variety of characters to life, from a woman who believes she can speak to spiders, to a boy determined to catch a giant pike, and a neighbor who stubbornly refuses to deal with garden moles (just to name a few). Some stories were hilarious, while others were quietly moving, and I appreciated the emotional balance between the whimsical and the reflective. I also liked how a few characters reappeared or subtly connected across stories, adding a deeper sense of community. While I sometimes wished certain stories were longer or more developed, that sense of wanting more speaks to how engaging the writing was. Overall, it’s a gentle character-driven read that celebrates the oddities and deep humanity of everyday life.”
