Publisher Description

From Africanfuturist luminary Okorafor comes a new science fiction novel of intense action and thoughtful rumination on biotechnology, destiny, and humanity in a near-future Nigeria.

Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt...natural, and that's putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was "wrong". But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is: A woman with a ton of major and necessary body augmentations. And then one day she goes to her local market and everything goes wrong.

Once on the run, she meets a Fulani herdsman named DNA and the race against time across the deserts of Northern Nigeria begins. In a world where all things are streamed, everyone is watching the "reckoning of the murderess and the terrorist" and the "saga of the wicked woman and mad man" unfold. This fast-paced, relentless journey of tribe, destiny, body, and the wonderland of technology revels in the fact that the future sometimes isn't so predictable. Expect the unaccepted.

“I was so close to DNFing because I was on a time crunch to return it to the library, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. There's a LOT of flowery prose, which I don't hate, but listening to it as an audiobook (which I'm still trying out over print media) makes it a little easy to get lost. The author also likes to sometimes take a segue into a side story that's mentioned in the plot, which can be lengthy sometimes (e.g. the podcast). I didn't mind it, but again, listening to it versus reading was difficult for me. I'm still working on my audiobook enthusiasm, but this helped! Massive props to the narrator; they did an amazing job. Like many others, I do believe this could have been a longer book, but I think the only thing that really suffered was that I felt like the main characters' relationships weren't super fleshed out. The romance was less believable, but near-death experiences will do that, I suppose. They didn't have a bad dynamic though, and the urgency of the plot made their closeness seem a necessary growth. The afrofuturist world of near-future Nigeria was actually very believable and just as reliant as our current society on influencers, media, and tech. I love how the main characters are intelligent in different ways and have strong convictions. GPS and Carpe Diem best boy and girl 🥺 Overall, a great read. Great commentaries on ableism, capitalism, overconsumption, privacy and surveillance, and morals and ethics. The further into the book you get, the more you see how deep it goes. The last three chapters were absolutely incredible, and the ending actually left my mouth agape.”
