No Trouble at All

By Alexis DuBon & Eric Raglin
No Trouble at All by Alexis DuBon & Eric Raglin digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Politeness is the glue that holds society together. We are all expected to do our part-a pressure ripe with horror. Rotten, even. Whether we adhere to this contract or defy it, there are consequences. These fifteen stories respond to promises made for us, promises of compliance that cost too much to keep.

Featuring Nadia Bulkin, Shenoa Carroll-Bradd, Ariel Marken Jack, Gwendolyn Kiste, Avra Margariti, J.A.W. McCarthy, R.L Meza, Marisca Pichette, J. Rohr, Simone le Roux, Angela Sylvaine, Nadine Aurora Tabing, Sara Tantlinger, D. Matthew Urban, and Gordon B. White.

No Trouble at All Reviews

“This was an okay collection of short horror stories all centered on the theme of "politeness". That politeness, of course, overstays its welcome or puts the user in danger, sometimes to the detriment of their very existence. The collection started very weak past the first story, but the middle stories were the best. I would read more anthologies by this press and/or these editors. Cire Perdue A story about disturbing complacency and personal weakness. The metaphor used was nice but the writing was a bit too dreamlike for me. I would have disliked it if it was a longer story or book. These Small Violences Goofy, weird premise that gave me bad vibes. I didn't read this one all the way through. The Dust Collectors Silly in a creepy way that doesn't make you smile, like a Twilight Zone episode. I liked this one. The World of Iniquity among Our Members Is the Tongue This was very much giving off Lovecraftian energy, which I love, but I also felt like the dialogue was very awkward. I don't like when a story is ruined by poor portrayals of teen/child dialogue. I still liked it and its ending. An Inherited Taste What was the point of this one? No growth or escalation or meaning to my mind. Anger Management Loved this one. Domestic horror at its simplest and finest. The Man Outside Also good domestic horror. Flat ending, but it was still tense in the beginning. As the Silence Burns I wasn't interested in this one, so I only read a couple pages. Seems to take place in Ancient Greece or something adjacent (which, obviously, I love historical fiction; but it didn't feel in place in this collection. Maybe the rest of the story would have proven otherwise). Acid Skin This one was super effective and I enjoyed it. I would have even accepted more grotesque descriptions. The Guest Room This was probably the best one, or in the top three. It was genuinely terrifying with its limited information and complete sense of hopelessness. Echthroxenia Flowery, nonsensical writing style. See Something Say Something This one was really fun. Definitely unnerving but it was a little slow. When Mercy Is Shown, Mercy Is Given This might have been good, but I can't do tooth horror, nope! Thirteen Ways of Not Looking at a Blackbird This one was very disturbing and effective with a good narrative style. This one was also top three. The descriptions (or, ironically, lack thereof) were great, and so was the narrator. Welcome to the New You Mandela Catalogue meets Stepford Wives??? I liked it. I received an advance review copy from BookSirens for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.”
“I really enjoyed the stories in this themed collection all about killing with kindness. If you dig horror from seemingly banal and courteous characters, No Trouble at All is for you! Not every story was a winner, but many lingered in my mind. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.”
