“Saturated in dismay, coated with dread, and finished off with agony—Yono, our main character, slithers from silver spoon to sole alienation bouncing from vices and women in dire search for a reason to live. *check trigger warnings* I picked this up as a gloom mood read and now I need to stare into the sun or something.”
“This semi-autobiographical novel places the reader into the mindset of Osamu Dazai prior to his death. Although there is no plot, the reader is taken into the mindset of Yozo Oba which is a character that is based on the Dazai’s own experience of social alienation, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and depression which leads him to feel no longer human. This character demonstrates a fear of other people and portrays himself as a “clown” to hid his true fear of society which is ultimately made up of other people. This novel is mainly thought-driven by allowing the reader to understand the way the main character’s state of mind which can be dark and bleak.”
