“woah! they made the oingo boingo song into a book????
seriously though: this is a horribly relevant read - i feel disgusted, i feel uncomfortable; im going to sleep weirdly tonight. i’ve had this to be read for a few years now, but given recent events i thought it’s ever-more pressing and unfortunately deeply poignant. what a world we live in.
now from a linguistic perspective, i was fascinated to see how the control of language is shown to vastly control society’s thoughts and feelings (linguistic determinism!!). seeing the way whole sets of words were ‘erased’ from public usage, thusly deleting entire schools of thought, was just mind-boggling and deeply concerning (though thankfully not linguistically accurate). i also seriously appreciated the newspeak appendix to finish off the reading experience (✨✨)
i also find it so FASCINATING that people continue to refer to this book so as to back up their woes against cancel culture and political correctness…like… did we read the same book? i fear these individuals haven’t read past the first page.
overall, i really did get a lot out of reading this. i find the way orwell writes dialogue both realistic and captivating; i enjoyed his multi-faceted cast of characters and trust in the reader to keep up with the (at times) intensely-paced narrative.
i wish it wasn’t as true-to-life as it is today, but i do find myself glad for having read this fascinating, deeeeeply bizarre book. is it 1984 or 2025?”

“4.5
I don't know, if it was a good idea to read this book now at this time, or if it was a bad one.
Fact is, that it is quite honestly scary to see so many parallels to the current state of society and what future
might
be possible.
True, I am late to the party reading this book just now, but better late than never. And I truly encourage everyone who hasn't read it yet, to read it.
The only reason I won't give this book the full rating is that I was honestly frustrated and being left feeling hopeless with that ending.”
