Night Side of the River

By Jeanette Winterson
Night Side of the River by Jeanette Winterson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A captivating collection of ghost stories from “one of the most gifted writers working today” (New York Times), Night Side of the River is as ingeniously provocative as it is downright spooky.

In this delightfully chilling collection, the iconic Jeanette Winterson turns her fearless gaze to the realm of ghosts, interspersing her own encounters with the supernatural alongside hair-raising fictions. Lifting the veil between the living and the dead, Winterson spirits us away to a haunted estate that ensnares a nomadic young couple in its own dark past, a staged immersive ghost tour gone awry, a West Village séance that threatens the bounds between AI and reality, and a vacation home in the metaverse where a widow visits an improved version of her deceased husband. Gloriously gothic and unnervingly contemporary, Winterson examines grief, revenge, and the myriad ways in which technology can disrupt the boundary between life and death.

Night Side of the River Reviews

“I genuinely feel that I would include this book as a life defining book. I borrowed this from the library expecting a nice spooky read and instead had my heart stopped, broken and glued back together. I’ve encountered more grief this year than I have in a long time. This book gave me solace. It’s also given me a lot to think about when it comes to death - where does the afterlife begin? What does death look like online? Who gets to define death? Does time bend for those connected to “hauntings”? Are hauntings really hauntings or the last sigh of a love or rage deeply felt? Oh, the stories about places!! The houses!! I loved it!! This book also articulates the loss of a partner/spouse in a way that I don’t think I could ever manage. It’s not something I have personally experienced, but it’s something I deeply dread. These quotes stood out for me: “I am here because I love you and that is not forgotten not lost not diminished not weakened not faded. It needs no punctuation. No explanation. Love doesn’t leave me, but I am leaving me, and I am leaving you. I am sorry.” And “I cover him with the last of me, and I love him, and he sleeps.” I’ve had at least three moments where I’ve had to pause because I’ve started sobbing. The author should be immensely proud of this incredible collection of stories.”
