Publisher Description

From Michael Crichton, the #1 bestselling author of Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain, comes a devilishly clever, breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and genetic ownership shatters our assumptions.

Welcome to our genetic world.

Fast, furious, and out of control.

This is not the world of the future—it's the world right now.

Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blonds becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only four hundred genes; is that why a chimp fetus resembles a human being? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction—is it worse than the disease?

We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps, a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars and to test our spouses for genetic maladies. We live in a time when one-fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else—and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes....

The future is closer than you think.

“I wanted a Planet of the Apes type of novel, but this was not anywhere near that. We had a transgenic chimp and a transgenic parrot, but that's it. Everything else was just following a bunch of people who were all loosely connected to each other, a lot of sexism and sexualizing of women and young girls, infidelity, and an entire random plot line about how sexual violence is genetic because it released dopamine. Shut the fuck up.”
“This was a fantastically written book, and the short chapters combined with lots of different perspectives made the book almost addictive. I was very grateful that Crichton kept the reader in mind, and almost always reminded the reader about what character did what, who they were related to, etc. This helped keep the book readable while still featuring a huge amount of characters and plot lines. I loved it!”
Thinking Face“Michael Crichton never disappoints with his ability to thoroughly research and expand upon an existing issue. In Next, he tackles a variety of topics including Genetic Patenting, Transgenic research, and biases in media and research, to name a few. This book makes you think by bringing to life many characters and many different plots occurring in the same timeline. Although it helps to have an existing understanding of Biology and research, the book centers itself more around the people and the drama surrounding the topics. There are many tanglings of themes and patterns and stories that makes the book a quick read. If you cannot get through the book for any reason, at least read the Author’s note at the end where Michael Crichton lays out his main takeaways based on his research.”
