My Poor Pirate
By Jurģis LiepnieksPublisher Description
After sixteen years of marriage, Marat wants to get rid of his wife, Twinka. However, getting a divorce doesn't seem like the right choice. It's one thing to break a woman's heart when she's in her twenties – but it's another thing entirely to ruin her life when she's in her forties. The never-ending fights about custody and the guilt of putting his daughter through the extended disputes . . . Which is why Marat concludes that murdering his wife would be the most favorable option for everyone, including his wife. Marat's friend Dimitri – the only person he trusts to share his logic with – draws comparisons to Dostoyevsky's Raskolnikov and attempts to change his mind, but it's already too late. However, not everything goes according to Marat's plan.

“I was so influenced and swayed by reviews that I was really disappointed by how hard it was so push myself through this book. It seemed to have so many loose ends while other aspects had lots of time and detail that were seemingly benign in regards to the plot. I didn’t feel a rush to turn a page until I was very near the end and then again it tapered off.”

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was one of the most unique crime novels I’ve ever read. The best way I can describe it is twisted, manipulative, and toxic.
Every character is in a limbo of right vs wrong; no one is perfect, but no one can admit to it.
I found the only truly likable character in the whole book Detective Draco; he emerges as a beacon of clarity in a sea of deceit, providing a refreshing perspective amidst the chaos.
Marat's overwhelming narcissism leads him down a path of self-destruction, creating more problems for himself than anyone else. It's clear that a simple divorce could have spared everyone involved from the mayhem!!
While Marat's actions evoke little sympathy, Twinka's brings a mix of compassion and frustration. Despite her struggles with self-esteem, alcoholism, and marital dissatisfaction, her naivety and hidden secrets diminished her likability a lot for me.
The author does a good job of making you question the concept of morality. Who are the real antagonists of the book, and are there really any true protagonists?
What sets this novel apart is its unpredictability. With shocking revelations and twists occurring at every turn, I found myself on the edge of my seat, unable to predict what will happen next. What starts as a simple concept completely crashes down into a toxic mess.
My only con with this book is that it’s very long at 596 pages and extremely character-building based in the first half, making it hard to get into at first, but by the second half, when it was more plot-focused, it was a lot more engaging.
While 'My Poor Pirate' may require patience to fully appreciate, its chaotic narrative and complex characters make it a captivating read.”
