“3.5 stars
This is an incredibly melancholy and somber book, and I will admit that I might bump this up as I am already finding that my enjoyment when looking back at the book as a whole is much greater than the enjoyment of the reading experience.
As a simple explanation this is a story published in 1971 and looks at growing old; of being forgotten and pushed aside by your family, about loneliness and the indignities of dealing with old age and illness. Some passages were written with beauty and grace, but at the same time it didn’t shy away from the uncomfortable truths and wasn’t afraid to make characters unlikeable while still allowing you to pity them. I think most people would recognise some of the characters in this book from their own lives.”
