Publisher Description

“A narrative of great power. Warm with friendly personality and pulsating with . . . profound eloquence and religious fervor.” —New York Times

In this novel based on the familiar story of the Exodus, Zora Neale Hurston blends the Moses of the Old Testament with the Moses of black folklore and song to create a compelling allegory of power, redemption, and faith.

“Moses, Man of the Mountain by Zora Neale Hurston. The synopsis: "This 1939 novel based on the familiar story of the Exodus, Zora Neale Hurston blends the Moses of the Old Testament with the Moses of black folklore and song to create a compelling allegory of power, redemption, and faith." This is my fourth Zora Neale Hurston book (Barracoon, Hitting a Straight Like with a Crooked Stick, Dust Tracks on a Road).  The book was an excellent read and especially a treat for those familiar with the story of Moses. This is a powerful perspective on this old story. When reading this book, I felt transported into the lands visited in the story. Everyone can glean something from this story. The internal dialogue/perspective of Moses was insightful and helpful to me in my own life. Some key phrases that are not spoilers, but are valuable life lessons:   Freedom and Personal Ownership: "They did not believe they could take on any responsibility for themselves at all. They kept clamoring for somebody to act for them." A lot of times Moses wanted their freedom more than they did, but they would indeed have to act.  Comfort lulls you into complacency and mediocrity: "If this God you done got us mixed with just had to kill us, we sure wish He had of killed us down in Egypt on a full stomach."  Critical Thinking- Or Lack Thereof: "I done found out from this that people can do an AWFUL lot of feeling without doing a LICK of THINKING.  I read a physical copy of this book and I enjoyed every moment of the journey. Highly recommend.”
“why is it that every time someone else picks the book for fight club i have a terrible time. there's nothing inherently wrong and actually i think zora neale hurston is doing a lot of really interesting things with this ancient story but i was just so not engaged”
