Publisher Description

“Anthony Horowitz throws down the gauntlet in his infernally clever Sherlock Holmes pastiche.” — Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

The game is once again afoot in this thrilling mystery from internationally bestselling author Anthony Horowitz, sanctioned by the Conan Doyle estate, that explores what really happened when Sherlock Holmes and his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty tumbled to their doom at the Reichenbach Falls.

Horowitz’s nail-biting novel plunges us back into the dark and complex world of detective Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty—dubbed the Napoleon of crime” by Holmes—in the aftermath of their fateful struggle at the Reichenbach Falls.

Days after the encounter at the Swiss waterfall, Pinkerton detective agent Frederick Chase arrives in Europe from New York. Moriarty’s death has left an immediate, poisonous vacuum in the criminal underworld, and there is no shortage of candidates to take his place—including one particularly fiendish criminal mastermind.

Chase and Scotland Yard Inspector Athelney Jones, a devoted student of Holmes’s methods of investigation and deduction originally introduced by Conan Doyle in “The Sign of Four”, must forge a path through the darkest corners of England’s capital—from the elegant squares of Mayfair to the shadowy wharfs and alleyways of the London Docks—in pursuit of this sinister figure, a man much feared but seldom seen, who is determined to stake his claim as Moriarty’s successor.

A riveting, deeply atmospheric tale of murder and menace from one of the only writers to earn the seal of approval from Conan Doyle’s estate, Moriarty breathes life into Holmes’s dark and fascinating world.

“The story felt like it progressed at a moderate pace, and maybe I’m an idiot of a reader, but the end reveal totally gobsmacked me 😮”
“FANTASTIC! I thought I saw the plot twist coming, then when it actually occurred I was floored. Had to put the book down and walk a lap before finishing the last chapter.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I’ve read a lot of the OG Holmes content so the major plot twist wasn’t a huge surprise. The main part that bugged me was some of the interpersonal interactions didn’t seem time appropriate. I don’t want to say more than that as it could spoil things. That being said, it was worth a read.”
“I read House Of Silk some years ago and remember really enjoying it. I've had this one on my TBR for years and when trying to figure out what to read next picked this amongst some other books, sent a photo to my bookish pal and asked her to help me pick. This was one of her two suggestions. I stayed up til 1am to finish it because I had to see how it ended (after initially putting it aside to go to sleep before picking it back up again) I should have seen the twist coming (I also assumed the twist would have been something different) but it still had me with my jaw dropped when it happened. Preferred House Of Silk (probably because it has Holmes and Watson) though this was a good read too. I've got some of the author's other mysteries on my TBR that I look forward to reading sometime.”
