“Set in 1918, a teenager named Máni is trying to figure out his place in the budding country of Iceland. He's an orphan but he's got a place to live, he loves the cinema, and he makes money by selling himself to men. Máni is a queer teen in a time where it is very dangerous to be known to be queer. Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Flu, this is a gritty look at what life was like for queer men just after the turn of the 20th century. Even though this was a short novella, there was a decent amount of depth to the discussion going on about queer men of the time. Mental sickness, physical sickness, it was an illness that could not be allowed to spread amongst the community, and even calls for death to those "sodomites". It was dark stuff. That being said, the character of Máni wasn't ashamed of who he was. He wasn't exactly "out", but he wasn't ashamed of it. He knew and it was simply a part of him. This was a sad little book, but worth the time to read. Could have done without the sex though.”
“An intriguing read, which made me re-read the last few pages. It’s written very tangible and is very moving in all its stillness. A lot happens, but our boy never happened.”
Loudly Crying Face“This one is quite a thinker. It's confusing yet beautiful and I think the reader will have a rough go of it if they take everything at face value. Prepare to confront your own and others' biases as you stumble through the delirium of this tale.; a harrowing coming of age story set in the times of Spanish Flu that are devastatingly reminiscent of COVID times. The ending and connection to the author is heart-rending and aweing. A wonderful (if you can call it that) little novella.”
