Moon of Skulls by Robert E. Howard & Paul Herman & digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Moon of Skulls collects Robert E. Howard's fiction and poetry published in Weird Tales Magazine from October 1929 to November 1930, plus one from Oriental Stories. These works represent literary stepping-stones to Howard's infamous Cthulhu mythos stories and his most famous character of all -- Conan the Cimmerian -- and ably demonstrate that each of Howard's stories improved and added to his formidable skills as a master of fantasy and adventure. Continuing the collection of Howard's fiction and poetry in order of publication, Volume Two of The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard picks up where Volume One left off -- at one of the most startling and controversial Howard stories of all: Skull-Face, a potent combination of gothic themes and oriental mystique!

Included in this volume are: "The Gothic Orient," by Mark Finn (introduction), "Skull-Face," "Dead Man’s Hate," "The Fearsome Touch of Death," "A Song out of Midian," "Shadows on the Road," "The Moon of Skulls," "The Hills of the Dead," "Black Chant Imperial," and "The Voice of El-Lil."

Edited by Paul Herman. Cover by Stephen Fabian.

“My third Solomon Kane story, and the first long one. The most interesting thing to me about these stories is how much of an asshole Kane is. Here, he is at the end of a long quest to find a damsel in distress, which has brought him to darkest Africa, where she is being held captive by some vampiress. The back story involves Kane having followed her trail by moving from one person to the next, all of whom die in the middle of supplying information to him. Important safety tip: if you hear Kane is coming to you for an interview, run. He may not kill you, though I wouldn't bet on that, but you're going to die anyway. Of course, when he gets near the end of the quest, the damsel is about to be ritually sacrificed, even though she has been held captive for years. That leads to a climactic scene involving lots of nakedness, suggestions of taboo sexual acts, and an orgy of violence. The ending reminded me a lot of Red Nails, but nowhere near as good. In all, it seems quite silly but still a lot of fun. And it's interesting to see how much growth there was in Howard as a writer from the Kane stories to the Conan stories.”
