“This is such an interesting topic to me - how and if we should separate the art from the artist and if the artist is a monster, how does this impact whether we consume their media (or not as the case may be).
In our age of the internet and cancel culture, monsters are exposed constantly - meaning fans are grappling with whether it is ‘okay’ or ‘right’ to continue being a fan.
I think this line just about sums up Claire Dederer’s stance; ‘consuming a piece of art is two biographies meeting: the biography of the artist, which might disrupt the consuming of the art; and the biography of the audience member, which might shape the viewing of the art.’
The book delves into well known figures and celebrities from artists and performers to writers and musicians with discussion about the levels of monstrosity and the impact it’s had on their creations. There are chapters that feel like more of a memoir, and others that read more as critical essays. I found it interesting and think the topic is more and more relevant than ever.
It was an interesting read, but mixed bag in terms of the chapters in my opinion.”

CLAIRE DEDERER is the author of Love and Trouble, and the New York Times best-selling memoir Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses, which has been translated into twelve languages. A book critic, essayist, and reporter, Dederer is a longtime contributor to The New York Times and has also written for The Atlantic, Vogue, Slate, The Nation, and New York magazine.
