“Excuse me, who gave this monkey permission to kick so. much. friggin. butt. in every chapter? Even after he converts to being a good little Buddhist monkey, he still comes up with the most creative, comedic ways to make even the most powerful demons run away in humiliation and terror. Is it repetitive? A little. But when the bad guy turns so good he reaches enlightenment in the end? It's worth it. Makes sense this dude inspired so many stories after him.”Ben MacKenzie

“Teaching mythology to teenagers often involves having to explain away the illogical or confounding actions of gods and heroes as “just the way thing were.” So I’m curious to see what students would think of this altogether different mythology where such illogical confoundings are justified with: “who cares? It’s funny!!”
The humor is key to the appeal of this quartet of pilgrims and their picaresque exploits across Tong-era China. Nothing is so dire or dour as can be answered with a pee-joke and some ur-Looney Tunes antics. While some stories drag a bit, most of this translation is so lively and silly that it’s easy to be charmed again every few battles.
It’s truly worth the challenge of older language and unfamiliar touchstones to just revel in madcap mythology.”About Wu Cheng'en
