Publisher Description

A chilling crime thriller set in colonial America by the New York Times–bestselling author: “The Corbett novels are rich, atmospheric stories” —Booklist on The River of Souls

In 1702, Matthew Corbett is an apprentice problem solver for the Herrald Agency, currently tasked with accompanying serial killer Tyranthus Slaughter on a journey from a Philadelphia asylum to the New York City waterfront. But during the trip, Mr. Slaughter tempts Matthew and his colleague Hudson Greathouse with an unexpected offer—leading to catastrophic outcomes. This darkly compelling novel delves into both the mind of a murderer and the process of a city and a nation moving into the future.

“Mister Slaughter, the third installment of the Matthew Corbett series, is an absolutely AMAZING page-turner I can easily recommend to lovers of historical fiction and mystery! Robert McCammon knows how to write truly reprehensible villains (Mister Slaughter is horribly despicable, to put it nicely), and seeing what sort of new monsters he dreams up for the Matthew Corbett series has become a favorite for me. It's been wonderful seeing how Matthew's character evolves over the course of the series, and he feels like such a real character. He's as flawed as the rest of us, making mistakes and having selfish lapses in judgment that result in dire consequences. There is a wealth of awesome side characters you can't help but love (and mourn if/when tragedy befalls certain individuals; you'll just have to read to find out), and I look forward to seeing the ones who survive return in future novels of the series -- or at least, I hope some of them will show up again. The suspense drives this novel's plot from beginning to end, with a few smaller sub-plots fitting in nicely with the overarching mission our friends at the Herrald Agency have been tasked with. Never for a second did I feel like the story dragged its heels. On to the next in the series! I can't wait!”

About Robert McCammon

Robert McCammon (b. 1952) is one of the country’s most accomplished authors of modern horror and historical fiction, and a founder of the Horror Writers Association. Raised by his grandparents in Birmingham, Alabama, Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Award–winning McCammon published his first novel, the Revelations-inspired Baal, when he was only twenty-six. His writings continued in a supernatural vein throughout the 1980s, as he produced such bestselling titles as Swan Song, The Wolf’s Hour, and Stinger.

In 1991, Boy’s Life won the World Fantasy Award for best novel. After his next novel, Gone South, McCammon took a break from writing to spend more time with his family. He did not publish another novel until 2002’s Speaks the Nightbird. Since then, he has followed “problem-solver” Matthew Corbett through seven sequels, in addition to writing several non-series books, including The Border and The Listener. McCammon still lives in Birmingham.
