Miss Garnet's Angel

By Salley Vickers
Miss Garnet's Angel by Salley Vickers digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Amidst the labyrinthine streets of Venice, Julia has a revelation that will forever change her life.

After the death of her longtime friend and flatmate, retired British history teacher Julia Garnet does something completely out of character: She takes a six-month rental on a modest apartment in Venice. She befriends a young Italian boy and English twins who are restoring a fourteenth-century chapel. And she falls in love for the first time in her life with an art dealer named Carlo.

Juxtaposing Julia's journey of self-discovery with the apocryphal tale of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael, Miss Garnet's Angel tells a lyrical, incandescent story of love, loss, miracles, and redemption and of one woman's transformation and epiphany.

Miss Garnet's Angel Reviews

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This is a book I read for the first time nearly 20 years ago, just before we visited Venice. I had good memories of the book and decided to re-read it. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it as much this time. I still enjoyed the story of an elderly woman deciding to retire to Venice and how she makes a life for herself there. I found the descriptions of the city, its canals, its art, and its architecture to be the highlights of this novel. The author introduces characters into the main narrative who represent modern-day imaginings of characters from a specific ancient religious text (the ancient story is told alongside the main narrative, at the end of the chapters). There are some very distressing aspects to these supporting characters’ stories, which I thought added some unnecessary unpleasantness to the story.”
“This was a very middle of the road book in every sense; characters, atmosphere, plot, it all was simple and expected. May things do not get resolved, and overall it felt like watching an episode of a reality TV show that you haven't followed.”
“A nice story, it’s never too late to start living life. A nice life affirming story of self discovery, I loved the incorporation of the book of Tobit, also.”
