“<strong>Theological Connections</strong>
This was a wonderful read. The bookend pieces by Dean are incredibly creative and helpful. Connecting Hauerwas and Peter Parker was a bit of creative brilliance that I am almost afraid will be too niche to be widely appreciated. Additionally, Dean’s “A Tale of Two Stanleys” in which he compares/contrast Hauerwas’s sermons with Andy Stanley is a masterpiece. Extremely helpful and includes a gentle critique of Hauerwas that I agree affirm.
The content in between these essays is wonderful as well (including numerous Hauerwas sermons). One of my favorite essays, “A Sanctuary Politics: Being the Church in the Time of Trump” was co-authored with Dr. Jonathan Tran. It’s an excellent analysis of what concerned them about Trump’s presidency. (and in light of current polls, could become very pertinent again some 7-8 years later).
This collection of essays and sermons does very well to demonstrate how Hauerwas has continued to make theological connections across many disciplines. A valuable read for anyone looking to learn about those connections.”
About Stanley Hauerwas
Stanley Hauerwas is professor emeritus of ethics at Duke University where he held the Gilbert T. Rowe chair for more than twenty years. Among his numerous publications are Sanctify Them in the Truth: Holiness Exemplified (1998) and Living Gently in a Violent World, with Jean Vanier (2008). His latest publication is Fully Alive: The Apocalyptic Humanism of Karl Barth (University of Virginia Press, 2023).
