Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter

By Simone de Beauvoir
Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter by Simone de Beauvoir digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“A book that will leave no one indifferent, and no one affected in quite the same way.” —New York Times

A superb autobiography by one of the great literary figures of the twentieth century

Simone de Beauvoir's Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter offers an intimate picture of growing up in a bourgeois French family, rebelling as an adolescent against the conventional expectations of her class, and striking out on her own with an intellectual and existential ambition exceedingly rare in a young woman in the 1920s.

Beauvoir vividly evokes her friendships, love interests, mentors, and the early days of the most important relationship of her life, with fellow student Jean-Paul Sartre, against the backdrop of a turbulent political time.

“[3.75/5 stars] I love simone's writing and this is her third work that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. My only issue with her books is that I feel the need to slow down and immerse myself in her writing but the problem is I'm anything but a slow reader. I am getting to enjoy fragments of her writing when I know fully well there is more to be offered if I just took the time to digest her writing. Nonetheless, a very insightful memoir, although I find the beginning a tad bit unrealistic. I doubt anyone remembers their childhood in that much detail.”
“❝The monotony of daily life continued to weigh heavily upon me: Oh! Deadly awakenings, life without longing, without love; all over, finished already, and so quickly; frightful boredom. Things can’t go on like this! What do I want? What can I do? Nothing, nothing, nothing. My book? Vanity of vanities. Philosophy? I’m fed up to the teeth with it. Love? Too tired. Yet I’m only twenty. I want to live!❞ ❝…her wings are cut and then she is blamed for not knowing how to fly.❞ –Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex As a consequence of growing up in a French bourgeois family in the early 20th century, Simone was forced to follow many conventional attitudes, rules and even attire. She was expected to behave and act in a way that went against her own beliefs and free spirit. She was clearly ahead of her time and had a mind of her own at an early age, which forced her to rebel as an adolescent and say no to the obligations that were expected from her. Christianity played an integral part in Simone's upbringing, and I found it absolutely fascinating how she reflects on right and wrong, rules and sins, and tradition. Marriage was an obligation. To have children was a duty. Simone rejected everything that was expected of her and relied only on her dreams of one day pursuing a degree, a doctorate in philosophy, and writing as many books as she could and, at last, relying only on herself. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her life and her rise as a woman of vision and determination, and I applauded her strength and spirit as she shaped to become a feminist. She is worthy of admiration and appreciation.”

World-renowned for her metaphysical novels She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, de Beauvoir also wrote a number of essays on philosophy, politics, and social issues.
