“This book, originally written in Polish and translated into English, bears a wonderfully weird title which initially drew me in, but it ended up being one of the strangest things I’ve ever read.
It starts out in the far future, when archaeologists find a rare manuscript preserved from the 20th Century. The rest of the book is the manuscript, which concerns a new government agent, stationed in a vast building built under a mountain. He spends the bulk of the book trying to figure out his secret mission, which nobody seems to know, it being so secret. He goes through numerous adventures, meets loads of people who either speak in code, direct him to endless departments, or give him the runaround until he becomes massively confused and nearly crazy.
I came away from this book confused and half-mad myself, wondering what in the heck I had just read. I kept waiting for the REAL story to start, but it never did, and the book ends abruptly. It wasn’t until days later that I realized this is actually a philosophical think-piece about the nature of society, identity, and whether or not we actually have free will.
This book is short but not for the faint-of-heart. It is full of hidden meanings which probably become clearer on a reread, but I don’t think my sanity could take it.”
