The twelve books in Meditations chronicle different stages of Aurelius’ life and ideas. Never intended for publication, they are the personal notes of a man who studied his unique position of power as an emperor while trying to uphold an inner balance in the chaotic world around him. Although he ruled during an age of relative peace and stability throughout the empire, his reign was marked by military conflict and a devastating plague, killing more than five million people. Aurelius’ writings present an unprecedented look into the “spiritual exercises” which helped him through his tumultuous life and strengthened his patience, empathy, generosity, self-knowledge and emotional health.

About Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors (a term coined some 13 centuries later by Niccolò Machiavelli), and the last emperor of the Pax Romana (27 BC to 180 AD), an age of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.
