Mayhem and the Mortal by Shanora Williams digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“I am obsessed with this book! ... A top read of the year and a book that’s going straight to my favorites shelf.” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Devney Perry

One mission. One curse. No escape.

Zaira doesn’t want a hero. She needs a weapon.

To save her sister from a soul-devouring curse, she has to cross The Shallows—a nightmare landscape of ruined magic, shifting paths, and vicious creatures that eat people alive.

Her guide? Thane Valkor: sorcerer, assassin, walking red flag. His name clears rooms. His magic kills quietly. And whatever he’s really after, it’s not salvation.

He promises to help. He might even mean it.

But Zaira knows better than to trust a liar with a blade and ice in his veins.

She just doesn’t have a choice.

“"Ugh ofcourse he is wickedly handsome, I hate him even more." "My emotions are the only thing I truly have authority over. I refuse to waste it being angry on the past." Big thanks to the author and Red Tower Books for an ARC. I know the book is published officially already, I was able to do immersive reading which I highly highly recommend. The voice narrator truly brought the story to life, and immersive reading helped picture everything going on. I really enjoyed this a lot, this story is filled with twists and turns, action packed scenes, detailed fight sequences, Black mythical creatures and Humans, lots of yearning and angst as well. The story is a slow burn and as you read it, it makes the most sense, because Zaire and Thane needed to address their inner turmoil before allowing themselves to address the attraction they have for one another. This was such an enjoyable read and this is honestly for readers / fans of chaotic (compliment) expeditions with surprises and mythical creatures and shadow magic then you will definitely enjoy this!!! Zaira is so sweet, she is the most calm and bubbly person ever, her drive to save her sister and truly her determination and caring spirit made me love her character so much. She is funny and she is quick witted and charismatic as well. A few lines from the story that she said, had me cracking up. Thane, as grumpy as he was in this story, I truly found his character mesmerizing.”
“I’m sorry to say this, but this book was a disappointment for me. It had been on my TBR for quite a while because the blurb sounded promising, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations. It took me forever to get through the first 60% of the book. I never really felt the chemistry between the main characters. Everything just felt rushed. The final 25% of the story were definitely the strongest part and kept me engaged, but unfortunately, they weren’t enough to make up for the slow start.”
Anxious Face with sweat“Well shit I don’t like that cliffhanger… I didn’t know it was a series 😭😭😭 3.75 stars because I would have liked to have Thanes POV. I’m happy she got her sister back but she’s WAAAAYYYY to forgiving and naive for my liking! lol there’s a difference between hopefully optimistic and being a dumbass and she walks that line very frequently… lol I liked it now to find out when we can expect book 2…”
