“Intelligent, introspective, uniquely crafted, and erudite…The familial stories illuminate the history of troubling times in Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Germany…There is no denying that the characters are fascinating, like the history about which Petrowskaja writes.”

“A beautiful and keenly observed story of family history, migration, loss, and even hope. I read and reread so many passages and felt so deeply invested in the author's quest to connect with her ancestors and the traces they've left in their time on this earth. I also loved her observations on language and the way her multilingual brain drew connections between ways of expressing certain concepts across these languages and larger philosophical issues. I would so love to sit down and spend hours speaking with this author.”
