“The prose was very pretty, but I don’t think I really enjoyed the love story here — it feels like a forced ending compared to the relationship between Maurice and Clive. Though the whole story just feels like a writing exercise in filling a gap in the literature at the time it was written I don’t regret reading it. I’m happy for those who end up happy and I’m glad for those who end up sad. The end.”
“This wasn't what I expected, but it was a welcome reminder of how much I love E.M. Forster's writing. Beautifully written, thoughtfully philosophical and deeply romantic.
While I expected a love story, this was actually a thoughtful character study of Maurice Hall and 'the love that dare not speak its name'. As such, there was a fair amount of internalised homophobia and self-loathing – but this never felt oppressive. Considering the time in which it was written, it was actually quite open-minded. You can tell from his writing that this is based on Forster's own experiences, which makes it all the more special. Maurice is a complex and realistic character, and it was fascinating to read his development.
It was also incredibly romantic. Much like A Room with a View, there were so many lovely quotes about identity, life and love. Maurice's romance with Clive was especially moving amd devastating. While I also liked his relationship with Alec Scudder, I do wish there had been as much development with this. Nonetheless, a satisfying and somewhat surprising ending.
Really glad I read this – beautifully written, incredibly thoughtful and surprisingly easy to read.”
