Maul: Lockdown
ByPublisher Description
Set before the events of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, this new novel is a thrilling follow-up to Star Wars: Darth Plagueis
It's kill or be killed in the space penitentiary that houses the galaxy’s worst criminals, where convicts face off in gladiatorial combat while an underworld gambling empire reaps the profits of the illicit blood sport. But the newest contender in this savage arena, as demonic to behold as he is deadly to challenge, is fighting for more than just survival. His do-or-die mission, for the dark masters he serves, is to capture the ultimate weapon: an object capable of obliterating the Jedi and conquering the galaxy.
Sith lords Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious are determined to possess the prize. And one of the power-hungry duo has his own treacherous plans for it. But first, their fearsome apprentice must take on a bloodthirsty prison warden, a cannibal gang, cutthroat crime lord Jabba the Hutt, and an unspeakable alien horror. No one else could brave such a gauntlet of death and live. But no one else is the dreaded dark-side disciple known as Darth Maul.

“Might be a little biased since Maul is my favorite Star Wars character but I had such a good time reading this book. We already knew Maul was a badass but some of the things he does in this book are insane??? Ripping the head off a snake-stick-thing, shoving it in another creature’s mouth, and basically sewing that thing’s mouth shut so the snake can kill it?? Melting a varactyl’s face off with a steam vent?? Melting an Aqulish’s face off with God knows what that you found under the bench in your room?? CRUSHING A WAMPA’S STILL-BEATING HEART WITH YOUR BARE HANDS SHOVED UP ITS ABDOMEN??? Like hello??? Also Maul’s absolute SASS to everyone throughout the entire thing was 10/10. I loved seeing Maul become both a Disney princess with the clawbirds as his animal companions and a single dad to a kid maybe like 5 years younger than him. Most of the other characters were fine and believable enough when you consider that the setting is a random, reconfigurable prison that houses some of the worst criminals in the galaxy and makes them fight each other gladiator-style. The only one I didn’t really like at all waz Sadiki, and I’m happy she got crushed by the giant worm that is in said prison for some reason (yes, I know it’s explained in the story but it’s still a weird addition overall imo). The random Jabba the Hutt appearances were also pretty fun. Finally, I really loved seeing Sheev getting ragebaited by Plagueis here and there and having to be chill about it, quite the treat. Overall a good story with a really cool, unique setting and interesting characters!”
“I actually enjoyed the storyline despite Darth Maul not having his lightsaber for the majority of the book. This felt like a prison break book that was somewhat interesting with fights, but the reveals were underwhelming and not satisfying one bit. The background with Darth Plagueis and Sidious is more interesting than the main storyline, which is disheartening as a Darth Maul fan.. I Definitely enjoyed it but in the grand story of Star Wars this book isn’t needed to understand the bigger picture.”
