Mary A Fiction Reviews

3.0
“I read this book for a class and did not find it all that interesting. I think I just lack the understanding of older English to fully grasp the message Wollstonecraft was sending. That being said the plot line was easy to follow and it wasn’t difficult to get through.”
“Mary Wollstonecraft’s Mary, A Fiction is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. I found myself marking more lines than I ever have, simply because the prose was so breathtaking. Her writing is filled with raw emotion and stunning insights, making it impossible not to pause and take in the weight of her words. Normally, I’m not a fan of the excessive use of dashes, and Wollstonecraft certainly leans into them, but somehow, I didn’t mind. Her way with language is so fluid and poetic that it only added to the novel’s emotional depth rather than distracting from it. The story itself is remarkably ahead of its time, centering on a heroine who defies societal norms and refuses to conform to the limited roles expected of women. Her independence, intelligence, and deep emotional world make her a striking figure in literature, especially for the 18th century. Beyond its beauty, Mary, A Fiction is also a fast and immersive read. Though its structure may feel unconventional at times, the power of Wollstonecraft’s writing more than makes up for it. This book is both a literary treasure and a bold feminist statement, making it a must-read for anyone who appreciates strong female characters, exquisite writing, and stories that challenge societal expectations.”
