“The story was interesting. I learned a great deal about Indonesian history. The writing style, however, was completely distracting. It lurched from past to present and character to character and back again. Not worth it.”
“SLOW BURN BUT REALLY PICKS UP IN THE MIDDLE I was struggling with this book for quite some time but I powered on and finally finished it. It was beautiful. The characters in this book are complex and while they did some mistakes that makes me scream, I understand them. I understand why Adam is such a pushover and was annoyed by it a little. I also understand Din and was really triggered by how much he manipulates everyone. But I understand them. Some might feel icky over Margaret & Karl's relationship considering their age, but please bear in mind this was ages ago where these things don't matter. It's not right, duh! But I appreciate writers that depicts the past as it is, with all of the society's mess at the time. The build up towards the riot as the background of the characters were good. They don't overwhelm but they do feel like an upcoming threat. SPOILERS____________________ The only con that I can say is for Johan's story to feels significantly less dynamic than Adam. It's more just him going back and forth with his own existential crisis. I don't mind that they don't end up meeting or if it's just open ended. It's just how everything is so chaotic. Some people are just lost forever in the chaos. That's the very tragedy. I just feel like Johan's story could be fleshed out more.”
