Malice

By John Gwynne
Malice by John Gwynne digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The first book in acclaimed epic fantasy author John Gwynne's Faithful and Fallen series, Malice is a tale of blind greed, ambition, and betrayal set in a world where ancient monsters are reawakening -- and a war to end all wars is about to begin.

The world is broken. . .and it can never be made whole again.

Corban wants nothing more than to be a warrior under King Brenin's rule -- to protect and serve. But that day will come all too soon. And the price he pays will be in blood.

Evnis has sacrificed -- too much it seems. But what he wants -- the power to rule -- will soon be in his grasp. And nothing will stop him once he has started on his path.

Veradis is the newest member of the warband for the High Prince, Nathair. He is one of the most skilled swordsman to come out of his homeland, yet he is always under the shadow of his older brother.

Nathair has ideas -- and a lot of plans. Many of them don't involve his father, the High King Aquilus. Nor does he agree with his father's idea to summon his fellow kings to council.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Now, the stones weep red and giant wyrms stir, and those who can still read the signs see a danger far worse than all that has come before. . .

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Malice is my first taste of John Gwynnes writing, and another immensely popular fantasy series that I've had on my TBR for as long as I can remember. I can confirm that, at least for me, it totally lives up to the hype. The first half suffers from the normal stumbles of the first book in any new fantasy setting, wrapping your head around the characters and the world before you can start really appreciating the story and intricacies, but never would I describe it as badly written or bad. The zipping between characters can give you a bit of whiplash but stick with it and you will get one of the best first books in a series that comes to my memory. Gwynne does the perfect job of building a rich world with heaps of interesting characters while also leaving plenty of things unexplored for the future entries. Maybe it doesn't have the most original, never done before story beats but what it does it does well and that's more important to me than breaking any moulds. Naturally I already have all the copies of the following books so im raring to tuck into the rest of them”
“This was a GREAT start to what I think will be an amazing series! This book is heavy in the plot/character/series building, and by the end all the pieces start to come together and you realize how brilliant the set up was! Excited for number 2!”
