Malcolm Lives! by Ibram X. Kendi digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"Vital, brilliant" New York Times Book Review * A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection * 4 starred reviews

National Book Award–winning and #1 New York Times–bestselling author Dr. Ibram X. Kendi brings a global icon to life in the first major biography of Malcolm X for young people in more than thirty years--perfect for fans of
blockbuster hit STAMPED: A REMIX with Jason Reynolds.

As a youth, Malcolm endured violence, loss, hunger, foster care, racism, and being incarcerated. He emerged from it all to make a lasting impact. As a Black Muslim. As a family man. As a revolutionary. Malcolm’s life story shows the promise of every human being. Of you!

To trace Malcolm’s childhood and adult years, Kendi draws on Malcolm’s stirring oratory style, using repetition and rhetoric. Short, swift chapters echo Malcolm’s trademark fast walk. An abundance of never-before-published letters, notes, flyers, photos, extensive source notes, and more give young readers a front-row seat to his life.

One hundred years after his birth in 1925, Malcolm’s antiracist legacy lives on in this thoughtful and accessible must-read for all people. For you!

Just like history, Malcolm lives.

Malcolm Lives! Reviews

“When I tell you I did not walk I RAN to get my hands on this book when I found out it was coming out I’m not exaggerating. And it exceeded my expectations as is usual of Ibram X Kendi’s writing. THIS IS A MUST READ!! This book is labeled “for young readers” but it really is for everyone. It is clear and precise, without being dry; an enjoyable piece of non-fiction. Kendi is able to dive into heavy and complex topics with an empathetic and descriptive style. He turns questions back on the reader, “how would YOU feel if xyz happened to you?”, tackling the prejudice against low income, houseless, violent and criminal people. This biography helps one understand the motives and reasoning behind Malcom’s decisions and opinions, identifying why they changed throughout his life. I was particularly impressed by chapter 78: Gaza. Kendi manages to clearly, subjectively and accurately explain the Israel-Palestine conflict in 11 minutes. More effectively than any other piece of literature I’ve read thus far about the conflict. The reason it’s labeled “for young readers” (and why I urge young folx to read it) is because it is a standalone piece of literature. You could know nothing about American history, racism, etc, and you would fully understand this book. I cannot express enough how well written it is. Malcom X has been on my list of people I’ve wanted to spend more time reading about. So, when I found out one of my favourite black writers and historians was doing a Biography it felt like the stars had aligned. This will certainly go up to the top of my non-fiction list!”
