Maigret's Failure (Inspector Maigret)

By Georges Simenon & William Hobson
Maigret's Failure (Inspector Maigret) by Georges Simenon & William Hobson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A reluctant investigation into the murder of a hated man forces Inspector Jules Maigret to confront his own indifference, as justice slips quietly out of reach.

Summoned by a man he despises, Maigret reluctantly agrees to protect Félix Fumal, a former schoolyard bully turned ruthless businessman whose fortune has been built on the ruin of others. Now wealthy, feared, and politically connected, Fumal has begun receiving anonymous death threats—but Maigret’s interest is tepid, colored by old memories and a quiet sense that the man has earned his enemies.

When Fumal is found murdered in his own home, the case becomes a closed circle of suspects, each with ample motive and little remorse. As Maigret conducts his investigation, he moves without urgency, his usual instinctive immersion replaced by detachment and doubt. The truth hovers just out of reach—glimpsed, deferred, almost willfully ignored—until it emerges with disarming simplicity, too late to restore his confidence.

Maigret’s Failure
is both a subdued detective story and a penetrating study of professional and moral fatigue. With spare, unsentimental prose, Georges Simenon reveals a rare crack in Maigret’s composure, exposing the cost of indifference—and the unsettling possibility that justice, once neglected, may no longer matter.

About Georges Simenon

Georges Simenon (1903–1989) was born in Liège, Belgium. An intrepid traveler with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand—and not to judge—the human condition in all its shades. His books include the Inspector Maigret series and a richly varied body of wider work united by its evocative power, its economy of means, and its penetrating psychological insight. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon.

William Hobson

William Hobson is a writer and translator and a former contributing editor to Granta magazine. His translations from French and German include the Goncourt Prize winner The Battle by Patrick Rambaud, The Collector of Worlds by Iliya Troyanov, and Being Arab by Samir Kassir, which won the Index on Censorship’s Freedom of Expression Award.
