Maigret and the Saturday Caller

By Georges Simenon & Sian Reynolds
Maigret and the Saturday Caller by Georges Simenon & Sian Reynolds digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“A writer as comfortable with reality as with fiction, with passion as with reason.” —John Le Carré

Maigret is visited by a troubled man and asks him to keep in touch, hoping to curtail his criminal impulses--but when the man disappears, Maigret must investigate a crime that may or may not have occurred

When Maigret returns home at the end of a long day, he is surprised to find a tense man named Léonard Planchon waiting on his doorstep with an unusual problem. Planchon wants to kill his wife, or perhaps his wife and her lover, who for two years have been making him sleep on a cot in the dining room. He has even worked out a plan to hide their bodies in concrete. Uneasy and hoping to stop the man before he goes too far, Maigret must investigate a murder that has not yet been committed and uncover the truth behind this peculiar ménage à trois.

A fast-paced, psychologically astute mystery, Maigret and the Saturday Caller follows the inspector through Montmartre as he patiently questions Parisian partiers, bartenders, and others as to Planchon's whereabouts, stripping away a bit more of the mystery's camouflage with each encounter until they lead him to their shocking conclusion.

Maigret and the Saturday Caller Reviews

4.0
“Great book. Very moody. Nothing very much happens in Maigret novels, which took me a bit of getting used to, I was expecting more of a puzzle. They aren't dramatic, but always a great read and an unfolding of human nature. This was a particularly good one.”
“Fantastic. Odd duck fellow with hair lip comes to visit Maigret at his house late on a Saturday night (after having tried to see him at the office for a few weeks in a quiet way). He presents his problem: he wants to kill his wife and her lover. The lover has moved into his apartment with his wife and kid and he sleeps in the camp bed in the kitchen! they do all they can to drive him out, but he won't go because of the kid. He feels he can't compete and the other two are horrible. He goes out drinking every night to avoid the home. What else can he do (but kill them both). Maigret has no answers. He is interested and supportive, but what can he do? He tells him to leave but to keep in touch. Before long the man disappears. We don't know where - and no one seems to care. Maigret must push on and force the issue. They investigate his movements in the Montmartre bars and dives and finally hits upon a helpful street walker that ultimately leads to the dark truth. Great book!!!”
“Superb, I really enjoyed this one. Somewhat darker than normal and a very interesting case with no innocents really. Poor Isabelle. The next one will make it 60, just 15 more Maigret novels to go and I have read the lot.”
