““The self-help books urged you to be yourself, and yet, as it turned out, being yourself was the crime to end all crimes.”
Susan is a woman with no personality who inherits a mansion full of taxidermy and makes that her entire personality. It’s a tough story to get through sometimes. As the last chapter shows, this was done on purpose, but being inside the head of a basic, conformist type is not super exciting. And yet they are human beings. In fact, most people are like Susan. I suppose it does one good to hear their stories. I wish her epiphany about her conformity and living for others had come sooner, but the ending did hit just right. I’m glad she came to the realization that even though non-conformity is punished, it’s worth it to live for yourself.”
