Publisher Description
A worthy pupil . . . A dangerous quest
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely Princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry.
Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.
Praise for Magician: Apprentice
“Totally gripping . . . A fantasy of epic scope, fast-moving action and vivid imagination.”—The Washington Post Book World
“Most exciting . . . A very worthy and absorbing addition to the fantasy field.”—Andre Norton
“The best new fantasty in years . . . has a chance of putting its aughor firmly on the trone next to Tolkien—and keeping him there.”—The Dragon Magazine

“It was fine, it wasn’t boring but it wasn’t all that enthralling either. Just felt kind of like a long intro, which I guess it is to be fair. The part with the dragon was the most interesting.”

“Book Rating: 2.4/5
World Building: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Characters: ⭐️⭐️
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pacing: ⭐️
Writing Style: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Enjoyability: ⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Final Reaction: When it was originally published, this was the first half of a book called “Magician,” and it shows. There are plot threads that are left dangling, characters that disappear, strange pacing issues, and a random time jump 3 chapters before the end. I’m guessing that most of this is resolved in the next book, but it makes for an abrupt and unsatisfying ending to this one. I really liked the beginning, but started getting bored about halfway through.”

“Fable got rid of the negative emoji reactions so my reaction is: 🥱

Final reaction: I struggled not to DNF at 55%, and that was only because I read it for a book club. By 80% I had the audiobook on 2x just to force myself to the finish line.
Every interesting moment was overshadowed by excessively boring writing, or was skimmed over entirely. I read via audiobook, so I borrowed the ebook just to go back and count: we were given approximately 5 pages of Pug's chimney, and yet only 2 pages discussing the void.
Even taking the original publication date into account, the characters are bland, tired stereotypes. The fact that five years have passed by the end of the book literally has zero effect on the characters' personal growth. Carline is old enough to kiss someone without it being weird now, I guess?
If being a MAGICIAN'S apprentice means sitting around, reading books, and finding your own way with practically zero actual magic use, then I guess my own apprenticeship was a success and I'm a full fledged magician now! Luckily, nobody has to sit around reading about every mundane detail of MY life.”
