Publisher Description

This harrowing tale of a young girl in the slums is a searing portrayal of turn-of-the-century New York, and Stephen Crane's most innovative work. Published in 1893, when the author was just twenty-one, it broke new ground with its vivid characters, its brutal naturalism, and its empathic rendering of the lives of the poor. It remains both powerful, severe, and harshly comic (in Alfred Kazin's words) and a masterpiece of modern American prose.

This edition includes Maggie and George's Mother, Crane's other Bowery tales, and the most comprehensive available selection of Crane's New York journalism. All texts in this volume are presented in their definitive versions.

“Maggie, A Girl of the Streets: 3.5 stars George's Mother: 2 stars A Great Mistake: 4 stars An Ominous Baby: 4 stars - If this baby had a name it would be Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All. A Dark Brown Dog: 3.5 stars The Broken Down Van: 2 stars An Experiment in Luxury: 3 stars Mr Binks' Day Off: 2.5 stars Stories Told by An Artist: 3.5 stars The Men in the Storm: 3.5 stars Coney Island's Failing Days: 2.5 stars The Fire: 4 stars When Man Falls, A Crowd Gathers: 2.5 stars New York's Bicycle Speedway: 5 stars - Is this the best one in the whole collection?? I think it's the only 5 stars I've given. An Eloquence of Grief: 4 stars In the Tenderloin: A Duel: 3 stars The "Tenderloin" As It Really Is: 3 stars In The "Tenderloin": 2 stars Stephen Crane in Minetta Lane: 1 star - There's too many harmful racial stereotypes in this one to give it any positive rating at all. Just did not age well. Adventures of a Novelist: 3.5 stars If you can't tell, I'm not a huge fan of this book. I don't think it aged well since publication. While it's not inherently about race, the author has included far too many harmful racial stereotypes for it to be considered worthy literature at all. I'm disappointed, but I didn't really know what to expect anyhow. At the very least, I'm impressed he published "Maggie" at the age of 21, but that's about it. The above stories average to 3.1, but overall I think I'd rate it 2 or 2.5 stars, at best.”
