“This book is written in the first person by a woman telling us of her life during the latter half of the twentieth century to the early 21st in France. I really enjoyed the first part of the book which looked at our heroine when she goes to university, makes friends, falls in love, buys her first house together, has children. She describes everything with such giddy excitement, she feels like she is the first one to put her name on a property deed but realising this happens to nearly everyone else. She portrays the specialness of everyday life as its the first time it happens to you. The second half she does something you can guess from the title, to me it never sits right with the character portrayed before. After the affair with in the end a not nice guy the only good thing was the amazing sex, the affair and the fact she doesn't have it anymore dominates and depresses the rest of her life. Everything over 40 is seen through such a depressing lense you feel like everything goes downhill when you get older.”Start a Book Club
